    Biography

    Professor Danow is the Director of the Russian Program in the Department of Comparative Literature and Foreign Languages. He teaches courses in 19th- and 20th-century Russian Literature; graduate and undergraduate courses in Comparative Literature from the ancient epic to the present, covering a wide variety of writers, works, and periods; and undergraduate as well as graduate courses in Semiotics, the study of signs and sign systems. Since coming to UCR in 1989, he has published the following books:
    Models of Narrative: Theory and Practice (1997)
    The Spirit of Carnival: Magical Realism and the Grotesque (1995)
    The Thought of Mikhail Bakhtin: From Word to Culture (1991)
    The Dialogic Sign: Essays on the Major novels of Dostoevsky (1991)

    His recently completed book manuscript is titled: Transformation in Narrative: From Homer to Joyce. In addition to five books, he has written fifty articles on world literature and literary theory. When not teaching or pursuing his research interests, he travels the world, in the past decade throughout Southeast Asia, China, and India. Because he believes that to live is to see and the world is a beautiful place.
