    Biography

    After receiving his B.A., Brian Lloyd pursued a career as a rock'n'roll songwriter and musician. The tedium of working low rent night clubs and minimum wage day jobs eventually brought him to his senses, whereupon he returned to academia for graduate studies at the University of Michigan. He earned his Ph.D. in American Culture in 1991. Lloyd specializes in twentieth century cultural and intellectual history, the history of American Marxism in particular. He is currenly working on a study of the ideas and strategies of the post-1968 American left.

    Finalist, Ralph Henry Gabriel Disseration Prize from the American Studies Association, 1992

    Research Area

    Fields of Interest: U.S. cultural and intellectual history and the history of American radicalism.

    Publications

    His book, Left Out: Pragmatism, Exceptionalism, and the Poverty of American
    Marxism, 1890-1922, was published by Johns Hopkins University Press in 1997.
