    Takeshita, Chikako

    Assistant Professor

College of Humanities, Arts, and Social Sciences
    Women's Studies

    Biography

Chikako Takeshita joined the Women's Studies Department in 2004. She brings to UCR an interdisciplinary training in science and technology studies and women's studies. She is teaching and developing courses on gender and science; women and technology; gender, technology, and the body; and gender, race, sexuality, and medicine. She is currently preparing a book manuscript from her dissertation titled "Negotiating Acceptability of the IUD: Contraceptive Technology, Women's Bodies, and Reproductive Politics." Her work demonstrates that various social interests, including the desire to control global population growth, the fear of medical litigations, attacks from antiabortionists, and the percieved need to secure the status of IUDs as a legitimate contraceptive method, have all played a significant role in directing scientific research on the device throughout its development over the last 40 years. Her future research interests include developing a theoretical understanding of the relationship between body and technology, where the body is viewed not only as a biological/physical/medical entity, but also as a site of technological intervention motivated by social, political, and scientific interests.
