Biography

Areas Of Specialization: Dance and Performance Theory, Asian Diaspora Studies. Professor Srinivasan's research work explores the inter-relations between gender, immigration, diaspora, citizenship, labor, and dance in the United States and Asian diaspora. Srinivasan is currently working on a book length project titled "Performing Indian Dance in America: Interrogating the Circulations of Transnational Women's Labor." This book explores the legacy of Indian dance as it has disseminated in the United States. Although her work speaks more broadly to dance in the global diaspora, in particular, this book calls to attention the relationship of the labor of transnational Indian female dancers and their unrecognized contributions to U.S. cultural formation for over one hundred and twenty five years. Srinivasan has also worked as an experimental dance/theatre choreographer in Chicago and Los Angeles, and has extensive training as a professional dancer in Australia. She is currently collaborating with the Arpana Dance Company in Southern California on education and performance projects. Professor Srinivasan has a PhD from Northwestern University in Performance Studies and an MA in Dance from World Arts and Cultures, UCLA.
